"They will rebuild the ancient ruins & restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations." - Isaiah 61:4
We are the Appel family, Christian missionaries serving in Caen, France.
France isn’t on the top of any lists for physical need. In fact, tourism is an important industry in France because it is a beautiful country full of interesting history and very good food! Yet, France is one of the most needy nations in the world.
Less than 2% of Europeans profess to know Jesus personally.
In France, the evangelical church makes up 1% of the population. Although Cathedrals and beautiful churches dot the landscape, the reality is that even French Catholic churches are, and have been, in decline. In the Northwest France—where we will be located—it is common to find one priest assigned to oversee 30+ nearly empty churches.
In a pamphlet written to inspire a worn-down revolutionary army, Thomas Paine wrote: “These are the times that try men's souls.” As we walked down French streets on our vision trip in October, we could sense the spiritual battle and heaviness. We are witnessing the greatest refugee crisis of our time, and growing Islamic extremism and terror attacks, sadly highlighted by the recent tragedies in Paris.
France is a nation in great need of the hope and love of Jesus Christ.

With over 60 years of experience in European missions work, Greater Europe Mission (GEM) has learned a lot about mission in Europe. Something we love about GEM is that we are always ready to learn and adjust to the changing landscape of missions in Europe. GEM’s mission statement is
“Disciple all peoples of Europe through rapidly reproducing churches”.
This reflects a strong understanding of the opportunity and need in the European mission field. Right now, is a moment of opportunity in Europe as many people, particularly from younger generations are open to hearing the gospel in part because they didn’t grow up in church so this message is new all over again. GEM also has a passion to see missionary families thrive on the field. There is an emphasis on ministry in teams and a “member care” department of people dedicated to supporting and caring for GEM missionaries.

God is on the move in France. Is He inviting you to join Him?
We cannot do this alone. The GEM France team stops what they are doing everyday at 10:02 to pray as Jesus instructed in Luke 10:2:
“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few, pray therefore to the Lord of the Harvest that he will send workers into his field.”
They are praying for us, those who will go and those who will send. Join together with us to share the love and hope of Jesus to the spiritually hungry nation of France. Please, stop now and pray. Ask if God is calling you to partner with us.
